Spice Spotlight: Making Dinner with Marjoram

This month’s spice spotlight is marjoram, a cold-sensitive perennial herb commonly found in the Mediterranean, North Africa and western Asia. With citrus and sweet pine flavors, marjoram is commonly used in cooking to add some hints of sweetness and acidity. Although marjoram and its close cousin oregano are often used interchangeably, marjoram has a milder flavor while oregano has more prominent notes.

You can find marjoram being used to garnish salads, soups and, you guessed it, meat seasonings! It’s best used when it’s dry because the flavors are more prominent, but it can also be used fresh. Marjoram is usually added at the end of cooking to preserve flavor or sprinkled on top fresh as a finishing touch to your dish.

Fresh or dried marjoram leaves can be made into a tea or an extract that can be found in health food stores. Marjoram has also been shown to have several anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It has been used to treat digestive issues and infections as well as colds, coughs and asthma.
